Alfa Romeo: the Golden Years!  1935-1985

2016

What’s Inside: from the webmaster

Purpose .....

This collection of vignettes and stories is dedicated

to my father, Fred Di Matteo, (1914-2003) who

for years was known as “Mr. Alfa” in the U.S.A.

(shown at right with my mother, Anna.)

Additionally, I toast and dedicate this website to my

friends (without whose help this website would not be possible)

who helped and submitted stories and photos to help tell the story.

In particular I want to thank Dario Radaelli, Don Black, Fiorenzo Busso, and Elvira Ruocco.

Fred’s dedication to the Alfa Romeo was world known and his contributions were immeasurable. He wrote countless technical articles for the local and national AROC publications. He was also a technical hot line advisor who took phone calls at all hours of the day and night. (even making house calls in the middle of the night if the troubled Alfista was nearby him).

He was the first to develop and lead groups of Alfisti

(Fred and Anna on one of their many trips to Italia)

to visit Alfa Romeo, acting as organizer and tour

guide. One such trip was to take possession of brand

new Milanos on the old European delivery plan in 1985.

On the one hand he loved Alfa Romeo with a passion,

while on the other hand he was an antagonist pushing

Alfa to fix defects and develop remedies for poor design.

To his end he remained a dedicated and loyal Alfista,

reminiscent of the pioneers discussed in this site. He was romantic and loyal having owned over 50 Alfas during his lifetime of Alfa ownership.

Much has been written about the cars of AlfaRomeo but very little about the thoughts and what the innovative engineers were doing and what influenced them. They are the unsung heroes who made AlfaRomeo as great and world known as they are. This, then, is the essence of what this web site is all about.

we are promoting the heritage of the brand through people

who have experienced AlfaRomeo directly and helped make the

AlfaRomeo automobile brand one of the world’s most beloved.

(Dario Radaelli, retired AlfaRomeo engineer)

This series features original words (in their own words) from some of AlfaRomeo’s greatest engineers. They will tell us their thoughts as they went through what I call the “golden years” of AlfaRomeo creativity and productivity from the mid-thirties to the point of “sale” to FIAT in 1986. The stories are excerpts from my book, which is not yet complete or published.

Dedication .....
